Introducing Invisalign®

If you’ve longed for a better smile but don't want to deal with the hassle of metal in your mouth, Invisalign may be for you!

What is Invisalign?

The Invisalign system— in short, comfortable and clear plastic aligner trays which are changed out every two weeks as teeth shift—can replace traditional braces for selected patients. The practicality and aesthetics of the system have proven a great draw for adults who want to straighten and correct the position of their teeth without drawing attention to braces. Invisalign is also appropriate for teens if they have no more “baby teeth,” and if the second molars are at least partially erupted. Since its invention in 1997, over 2.6 million people worldwide have been successfully treated with Invisalign!

How does Invisalign work?

First, impressions of your teeth are taken at our office and sent to Invisalign. The company uses advanced 3-D computer-imaging technology to plan your complete treatment plan—from the initial position of your teeth to the final desired position. After that, the series of clear aligners are custom-made for your teeth and sent to your dentist. Your dentist will place special clear attachments (aka “buttons”), on every tooth, to which aligners will be attached. You will be instructed how to remove the aligners when needed.

Inserting Invisalign buttons and trays is painless, and faster than placement of traditional braces. Each aligner is worn consistently for two weeks before being replaced by the next in the series, until the series is complete and the desired position of your teeth is achieved. The custom-made aligners are designed to move only the teeth that need to shift. Your dentist, based on your personal treatment goals, determines your specific Invisalign treatment time.

What are the primary benefits of Invisalign over traditional braces?

Invisalign aligners are transparent—people may not even notice that you’re wearing these invisible “braces.” Many patients report feeling less self-conscious and more comfortable with Invisalign aligners than when wearing metal braces, and they can also avoid trauma and irritation to their mouths. Invisalign trays are removable, unlike metal brackets or wires, so you will have the flexibility to eat, drink, and to brush and floss your teeth without the aligners. You can even whiten your teeth while under Invisalign treatment, if desired, by putting bleach gel in the trays.

How long will treatment take?

Because everyone’s teeth are different, the length of treatment will vary. On average, treatment takes about 12 months. During that time, our office will schedule regular appointments, usually about every four to six weeks. The goal of these visits is to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned and that you’re switching to the new aligners on time.

Will my insurance cover Invisalign?

Your dental insurance may cover Invisalign if you have orthodontic coverage within your plan. Dental benefits, like medical benefits, differ significantly from policy to policy. In general, if your plan includes orthodontic coverage, Invisalign should be covered up to the same percentage as the plan would pay for traditional braces. As your preferred dental office, we can help you determine what your insurance will pay for Invisalign by requesting preauthorization of the treatment in writing. We can also work with you by offering payment plans with monthly installments.
